Original Play Festival begins Wednesday

The Aloha Performing Arts Company’s 20th Original Play Festival kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu. The festival continues at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, with a free potluck meal celebration honoring all festival participants scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

The play schedule includes:

c Wednesday — “Impostor,” a comedy by Mark Tjarks; “Oh, No!,” a comedy by Susan Shafer; “Mrs. Chambers’ Used Car,” a comedy by Kitty Powell; “The Talented Tongue of Walter Lipinski,” a comedy by John Holliday; and “The Slip,” by Tjarks.

c Thursday — “Ask Pat,” a comedy by Dick Hershberger, and “It Had Been the Perfect Crime,” a comedy by Tjarks.

c Friday — “The Cupcake Conspiracy,” a comedy by C.J. Ehrlich and Philip J. Kaplan.

c Saturday — “In the Family Way,” a drama by Anthony Oliver.

c Sunday — Free potluck meal celebration. The “Opie,” a people’s choice for best script of the festival, will be voted on and presented.

Each evening’s readings will be followed by a brief discussion, when the audience is encouraged to take part.

An all-festival pass is $14; one night is $5. Attendees who save their ticket stubs can receive a $1 discount on a subsequent night’s admission. Tickets will be available at the door one hour prior to showtime and at alohatheatre.com.

Makaeo cleanup,
plant sale fundraiser slated Saturday

The Friends for Fitness monthly community cleanup of the Makaeo Walking/Jogging Path at Old Kona Airport Park is slated from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday. Volunteers should meet at the entrance near the water fountain. Garden tools, refreshments and snacks are provided.

A plant sale to benefit Friends for Fitness’ efforts to beautify the park is planned from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the path entrance. Bromeliads, century plants and other varieties will be available.

Female veterans
to be honored at PTA

The veteran centers of Hilo and Kona, along with various agencies, are hosting the third annual Women Veteran Day Celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Pohakuloa Training Area, to honor women who served, or are serving, in the military. The program will include veterans’ benefits information, a potluck luncheon and a guided tour of PTA. Access to PTA requires a reservation; contact Maricar Souza at 969-3833 or 960-1904.

Mai Tai Festival scheduled Saturday

Saturday is launch day for the Royal Kona Resort’s fifth annual Don the Beachcomber Mai Tai Festival. Celebrating the legendary cocktail, 20 mixologists from around the world will vie for the $10,000 first prize and title for the “World’s Best Mai Tai.”

In addition to the Mai Tai Mix-Off, the festival will offer other activities for everyone to enjoy. There will be live entertainment featuring award-winning musician Henry Kapono at a free pool party, tastings and voting for the best barbecue in Hawaii at the Battle of the BBQ contest, and shopping for island treats and locally produced goods at the Crafter’s Marketplace. Taster plates will be available for purchase and the public can vote for the “People’s Choice BBQ Award.”

Entry for all Mai Tai Mix events is free. The Crafter’s Marketplace will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Battle of the BBQ contest will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Henry Kapono’s Pool Party will go from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Mai Tai Mix-Off is scheduled from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
